For most of my life, I have tried to live only on what I need. If I have a tournament and I am running low on baits, I go out and buy how many I think I will need to get me through. But last night my perception on purchasing fishing tackle that way may have changed.

While stopping by Stone’s tackle shop in South Lakeland to pick up a few last-minute items for my tournament this weekend, I noticed that they were out of the line that I use. I usually pick up 1,175-yard spools and by the time I reline my wife’s rods and my own, the spool is empty. These spools at the discount stores are $9 a pop, and even more in the tackle shops. What I did notice while I was looking around — a 4,700-yard spool on the wall that they used for lining up customers’ fishing reels.
