Coyotes are often thought of a symbol of the desert Southwest. They’re a cliché of cowpoke films — you know, the scene where everybody is around the fire eating their beans and mournful howls are heard from the surrounding chaparral.

Maybe that’s based on fact, but here are some other facts for you: Coyotes have expanded their native range and now live throughout Florida. If you think they’re not in your neighborhood, you’re probably wrong. Our coyotes are often silent, and a lack of howling does not in any way indicate a lack of coyotes.
