Longtime Venice resident Edith Hurt died Aug. 26, 2013 at the age of 104.
She was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Edith was a graduate of Hathaway Brown School and received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Ohio Wesleyan University. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.
Edith married Joseph A. Hurt in 1933. They moved from Ohio to Brindletown (near Morganton), N.C. to mine for gold. They also raised race horses and owned a lumber business. They moved to Venice in 1947.
Edith was a Mayflower descendant of John Howland. She co-founded the Venice College Club. She worked at The Shopping Guide, then IHS Nursing Home where she was a receptionist and later worked in Activities until her retirement at age 91.
She drove until she was over 99 years old. Edith loved the beach and credited her long life in part to so many years regularly swimming in the Gulf. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1963, her son Carlton in 2001 and her two brothers, William and James Robbins.
She is survived by sons Bill and Jay, daughter Jo-Anne, grandchildren Joe and Randy Hurt, Mary McMullen and Nova Johnson, and five great-grandchildren.
