Marlow Forrest Brown, 88, of Venice, formerly of Batavia, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.

He was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Batavia, N.Y., the son of G. Forrest Brown and Anna Welker Brown.

A proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Marlow served in the Pacific from 1943 until 1946.

He married Shirley Mullaney from Oakfield, N.Y. June 14, 1947, and at a gathering of family and friends recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Employed by Traveler’s Insurance for 39 years in the Rochester, N.Y., office, Marlow was the manager of the claims department.

Marlow served his community in various ways. He was very active in the Batavia Jaycees on both the state and national level, and he served on the Genesee County Board of Supervisors from 1952 to 1956. He was a Third Ward councilman from 1956 to 1960 and received the Distinguished Service Award as the community’s “Outstanding Young Man of the Year” in 1959. From 1963 to 1966, he was chair of the Community College needs study and was instrumental in the establishment of Genesee Community College. Marlow was appointed to the Batavia Planning Board in 1966 and was elected chair in 1968. He also was very active in the Republican City Committee and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Batavia, N.Y.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. After he retired and moved to Florida he became a frequent golfer, and in 1990 he scored two holes-in-one in the same round of golf at Lake Fairways in North Fort Myers, Fla.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley of Venice, Fla.; his daughter, Kris (Ron) Hermance of Ridgewood, N.J., and his son, Gary (Heidi) Brown of Ithaca, N.Y. Marlow has five grandchildren, Emily Hermance Spahr (Nicholas) of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., R. Christopher Hermance (Constance) of Wayne, Pa., Alexander Hermance of Buffalo, N.Y., and Haley and Madeline Brown of Ithaca, N.Y.
