The Rev. Dr. John W. Mingus Sr., age 70, of Venice, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012.

He was born in Norristown, Pa., and came to the Venice area after serving churches in New England, Maryland and Tennessee. He also served on the national staff of the United Church of Christ. John was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sarasota.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly C. Hunt, of Venice; sons, John W. Mingus Jr. of Arlington, Va., Fredrick Eric Davis of New York, N.Y., Isaac Hunt Mingus of Venice and Samuel Hunt Mingus of Venice; brothers, Stanley L. Mingus Jr. and Robert C. Mingus; and four granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Ann Copeland Mingus, and his parents, Stanley and Mercedes Mingus.

Services: A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Farley Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated with a service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Sarasota. To send condolences, visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
