At a nursing home, jolted by loss

I’m visiting my mother-in-law in the Alzheimer’s unit of a nursing facility where she’s recently been admitted. My father-in-law, 88, can no longer take care of her at home.

Our family’s life has been shaken up in ways that become more challenging by the day. Today, my wife is busy trying to cushion the jolt to her father who now has to face living alone; and mother-in-law Jane and I are at a table in the nursing home waiting for her dinner, a grilled cheese sandwich — all she wants to eat today; and since she won’t take her pills, the staff has ground them up and sprinkled them on the melted cheese — but don’t tell her that!
