Bacteria, unsightliness being brought to our beaches

The natural beauty of our beachfront along The Esplanade is in danger of being replaced with man-made detention ponds — detention ponds and a pumping system costing $500,000, constructed to collect bacterial waste contained in stormwater that is presently being discharged into the Gulf.

There have been approximately four Venice Beach closings in the past six years due to high E. coli levels. All of the closings do not appear to have occurred after heavy rainfalls, suggesting that the high E. coli levels were sometimes caused by other events.
