Superb amendment would stop lawmakers from raiding fund

It may be hard to imagine today, with the populations in Charlotte, DeSoto and Sarasota still below 2009 levels, that the three counties could grow by 54 percent through 2035 to nearly 900,000 people.

That’s a slightly higher growth rate than the 51 percent projected for the rest of the state, which the Bureau of Economic and Business Research estimates could grow from 19 million to as high as 28.9 million by then. More conservative projections see Florida growing 34 percent to 25.5 million by 2035 and Charlotte, DeSoto and Sarasota growing by 27.5 percent to 741,500 souls.
