The fight over a specific fishing style used to catch Boca Grande Pass tarpon will reach a critical point today in Lakeland, as state fisheries officials decide whether to approve a draft rule that would outlaw the use of the bottom-weighted Pass jigs. The device has been both glorified and demonized during its 30-plus year history.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vote is preliminary — a final vote is not expected until September. But today’s hearing probably will be a strong indicator of what the future holds.
