Hernandez earns role as starter

ST. PETERSBURG — Roberto Hernandez will fill the empty spot in the Tampa Bay rotation and Jeff Niemann will become a long reliever, the Rays announced Friday.

This winter, Hernandez became the first free agent starter signed during the Andrew Friedman era at Tampa Bay. The question of which pitcher would remain a starter was one of the biggest the Rays had when they began spring training.
