NORTH PORT — Ro’Derick Spears sat on the cold earth near the Preserve’s finish line, breathing hard after winning the 300-meter hurdles.

His last chance to leave his name on the record books of the meet that bore the name of his fallen classmate and friend had been unfruitful.
