Ronald P. “Ron” Bergeron, 67, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte.
He was born Oct. 1, 1946, in Hartford, Conn., and moved to Port Charlotte in 2002 from Brooklyn, Conn.
Ron retired in 2002 as a New England wholesale building materials representative. Prior to moving to Florida, Ron was involved in countless family, community and church activities and organizations, within and around his hometown of Brooklyn. Shortly after moving to Florida, Hurricane Charley struck the Gulf Coast, whereby Ron continued his benevolent work and was instrumental in helping the residents of Port Charlotte, including members of Villa Carlos II, recover and rebuild in the months after. In his retirement years, he enjoyed fishing the Gulf waters, and was an avid sports enthusiast.
He volunteered for the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul, and co-chaired the fundraising committees for Karats & Krystals. Ron served as an officer and active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5399. He was a 47-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, which is where he began his lifetime of charitable work. Ron will be sadly and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Suzanne (nee Dextraze), and family and friends. His smile, laugh and acts of kindness will always be remembered.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Suzanne; two sons, Attorney Michael (Janice) Bergeron of Marshfield, Mass., and James Bergeron of Menlo Park, Calif.; his mother, Anita Bergeron of Port Charlotte; brother, Albert Bergeron Jr. of Windsor, Va.; seven grandchildren, Renee, Nicole, Danielle, Andrew, Katherine, Matthew and Isabella; and father-in-law, Raymond Dextraze of Port Charlotte.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, 21505 Augusta Ave., Port Charlotte, FL 33952; or the Peace River Hospital Heart Institute in Port Charlotte.
