Herbert J. Schmieder
Herbert J. Schmieder, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.
He was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Joseph and Myrtle Schmieder.
Herbert served in the U.S. Army. He spent his career in law enforcement, retiring in 1988, as a Police Captain after 30 years, of service to the New York City Police Department. He and his wife moved to this area in 1990, from Queens, N.Y. Locally, Herbert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a social member of the Kingsway Country Club. He was a former member of both the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the Punta Gorda Boat Club, and had enjoyed bowling twice a week with the Shore Birds and the Italian-American Club.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ida Schmieder of Punta Gorda; son, Michael (Karline) Schmieder and their son, Graham Michael; daughter, Suzanne Schmieder and her daughter, Sydney Rose, all of New York City, N.Y.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda.
