PUNTA GORDA — As you drive the streets and roadways in the Punta Gorda area next week, you may see large groups of patrol cars along the side of the road. But don’t worry. It isn’t about a major incident. They are students attending a radar class that the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is hosting from Dec. 10 through Dec. 14. The Sheriff’s Office expects to have officers from many different agencies, including agencies outside of Charlotte County, attending the one-week school. While there will be work done in a classroom setting, part of the requirements for radar certification is for the students to actually set up and run radar/laser speed checks as a practical exercise. These exercises will be conducted in the Punta Gorda area only. The class hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., although the practical exercises may be scheduled for slightly later in the day. So if you see what would perhaps be considered a “large congregation” of patrol cars from different agencies along the roads in Punta Gorda next week, it is the radar class getting field training.
