NORTH PORT — A 68-year-old New York woman was killed and her passenger critically injured Saturday afternoon when the SUV they were riding in crashed into a tree on Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Evelyn Schleimer of Bayside, N.Y., died at the scene. Barry D. Schleimer, 70, also of Bayside, was flown by helicopter to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where he was listed in critical condition.
