Jazz: ‘An American gift to the world’
Richard Ramos
At the dawn of the 20th century, African and European musical traditions blended in the black communities of the southern United States to produce a uniquely American musical genre — jazz.
In the century since its birth, jazz has evolved a variety of distinctive styles, such as: New Orleans, swing, big band, Afro-Cuban, Latin and other jazz styles. Musical characteristics overlaid on loosely defined temporal periods exemplify many jazz styles.
