Elderly couple die in blaze

A man and woman died in their Punta Gorda home on Wednesday after a fire ignited inside. Authorities say the fire extinguished itself because of lack of oxygen. The home had hurricane shutters covering many of the outside windows.

PUNTA GORDA — An elderly couple died in a fire in their Punta Gorda Isles home Wednesday night, according to the Punta Gorda Police Department.
Property records show the home was owned by John and Carol Fitzmaurice, but authorities are not releasing the identities of the victims until they’ve been confirmed by the Charlotte County Medical Examiner.
