PUNTA GORDA — Mayor Bill Albers of Punta Gorda Isles announced Wednesday he will not seek re-election this year to either the District 5 seat he’s held for the past seven years or to District 4, where the City Council placed him when it redrew district boundaries a year ago.

Albers said he chose to make the announcement now because Charlie Counsil, a former president of the Burnt Store Isles Association who has been attending council meetings for years, was poised to announce his intentions to run for Albers’ District 5 seat.
