NORTH PORT — February is Black History Month, a time set aside to recognize black Americans for their contributions to the nation.

According to www.african
americanhistorymonth.gov,
the celebration became monthlong in 1976, when President Gerald Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
