The red line on this aerial photo outlines the 81-acre Warm Mineral Springs spa and land surrounding the 87-degree lake, which was jointly purchased by the city of North Port and Sarasota County in 2010. The city is now asking other government agencies if they would be interested in buying the city's portion of the land. On Tuesday, the county warned that the city's recent actions may force the Springs to shut down.
NORTH PORT — Turning down Sarasota County’s $2 million offer to buy North Port’s portion of the Warm Mineral Springs Day Spa, city commissioners now are asking if state or federal agencies want to purchase it.
Calling the county’s late January offer “terrible,” commissioners voted 4-0 late Monday night to reject its proposal to purchase the city’s share of the 81-acre Springs. The plan would have forced the city to deannex the land surrounding the 87-degree lake from North Port, after running water and sewer lines to the property.
