ST. PETERSBURG (AP) — The general manager of WTSP-Channel 10 in St. Petersburg has announced his retirement four years after arriving at the station.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that when Ken Tonning arrived in 2009, the CBS affiliate was struggling with change, including a switch to an online-inspired name — “10 Connects.”

Under the tenure of 68-year-old Tonning, the station has returned to its “10 News” brand and has adopted a more aggressive style of journalism.

As an example of WTSP’s new attitude, Tonning points to coverage last year of a legislative battle which could have cut funding to the University of South Florida. The station created the Twitter hashtag #SaveUSF and took a stand in its coverage against the nearly 60 percent cut.

Tonning plans to retire July 5.
