SARASOTA COUNTY — Instead of adopting new, lower impact fees on new buildings in Sarasota County as they initially hoped, county commissioners will look to extend the current 5-year-old fee system at a public hearing Wednesday in Venice.

The road impact fees, which are based on highway capacity, or the number of vehicles on the road, are based on 2006 building rates that were determined in the construction boom, when prices were much higher than current levels, and prior to the economic downturn. They were reduced by 50 percent in early 2011. That reduction is set to expire Jan. 31. The fees were set at 68 percent of what was recommended by a consultant in 2007. When the county made the 50 percent reduction in 2011, the fees dropped to a third of the recommended rate.
