Landfill request struck down
The Charlotte County Commission struck down a request from Calusa Growers to remove a section of fallow citrus grove from a county land-use map that designates the site an environmentally sensitive area and restricts a landfill from being built on the property.
About 400 people packed the commission chambers and an “overflow” room Tuesday afternoon during the land-use portion of the commission meeting to hear testimony from attorneys, environmental experts and staff arguing for and against an application to strike from the map 554 acres of agricultural land in eastern Charlotte County on which a Class 1 regional landfill is being proposed.
