Calusa seeks to amend plan
The owners of a partially defunct citrus grove in eastern Charlotte County where a regional landfill is being proposed are seeking to amend the county’s comprehensive plan, saying that the map which identifies the land as a prime aquifer recharge area is wrong.
The application, which was submitted by Calusa Growers LLC, will go before the county’s Planning and Zoning board next month for review. If the board makes a recommendation that the future land use map included in the county’s 2050 comprehensive plan be amended, that would remove one of the restrictions that prohibits a landfill, among other things, from being built on 554 acres of the roughly 5,000 acres that Calusa Growers owns, said Rob Humpel, president of Florida Premier Contractors and principal partner of Calusa Green LLC, the company behind the proposed landfill.
