PORT CHARLOTTE — Authorities on Monday continued investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who reportedly shot himself with a firearm at his family’s home Sunday morning, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
The CCSO received a 911 call from a home on the 21300 block of Hubbard Avenue in Port Charlotte at 3:40 a.m., according to the report. The boy was transported to Peace River Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. MCU detectives say once their investigation is complete, they are required to send the case package to the State Attorney’s Office in Punta Gorda in the death of a minor. The SAO will review all of the evidence to determine if there was culpable negligence. As an open and active investigation, names and details are not being released at this time. Most of the neighbors on the street did not know there was a disturbance until they walked outside of their homes on Sunday morning and saw the crime scene, which included the entire end of Hubbard Avenue. Yellow caution tape was strewn across the street and tied to nearby trees.
