PORT CHARLOTTE — Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Fort Myers man at 9:30 a.m. today after he was released from a hospital in Port Charlotte. The man was admitted to Peace River Regional Medical Center after he ran from deputies and received scratches from palmettos and K-9 bites early Tuesday morning. Arrested for loitering or prowling and resisting an officer was Antwond Jamal Roberts, 22, of the 2400 block of William Street. CCSO received a call Tuesday at 1:46 a.m. and responded to a home in the 3000 block of Clifford Street in Port Charlotte. The caller said a man rang his doorbell and knocked on the door. The subject, with no shirt and wearing camouflage pants, was located as deputies approached the area. A deputy told the man to stop, but he ran into a wooded area. A K-9 unit arrived and a track began behind homes on Wilkinson Street. The K-9 deputy announced his presence and told the man if he did not exit the wooded area he would release his dog. He did not respond and was bitten in the leg and ankle area. He then jumped a fence and ran to the K-9 deputy’s patrol car and tried to enter the locked vehicle. He ran again but was quickly subdued and handcuffed.

The man was identified as Roberts, who was constantly mumbling incoherently, sweating profusely and very warm to the touch. Due to his condition, cuts and K-9 wounds, EMS transported him to the hospital, where he was admitted. When released this morning, Roberts was transported to the Charlotte County Jail, where he remains on $1,500 bond.
