Dave Chadwick of Punta Gorda sits in a Gilchrist Park gazebo Friday. He plans to live on a sailboat in a nearby anchorage, so he supports the city's park-improvement plans.

This gazebo in Gilchrist Park will undergo renovations this winter, to include the addition of a ramp to provide access for people with disabilities.
PUNTA GORDA — After some 25 years of planning, this city is poised to complete at least a scaled-back version of its “Ring Around the City” park projects this winter — and to refurbish a popular gazebo and interactive fountain area to boot, according to growth management director Dennis Murphy.
Murphy, a city staffer for some 20 years, acknowledged he has “lived, breathed and sometimes cried” over the projects, which include the Harborwalk, Linear Park and Multi-Use Recreational Trail, or MURT.
