VENICE — Sarasota and Charlotte county motorists were not alone Sunday. Over 600 bicyclists joined the morning commute on portions of State Road 776 and Tamiami Trail. The inaugural REV3 Florida HalfRev Triathlon kicked off at 7:50 a.m. at Maxine Barritt Park in Venice. The 56-mile bicycling part of the race meandered through congested county roadways, causing delays. With only two minor accidents, and pumping an estimated $1 million into the counties combined, race officials consider the event a success.

“This was the first time this event has been held in Florida. Everything went smooth,” said race director John Letourneau. “I’m sure some drivers out there got a little angry, but that is going to happen. I’m just happy things went as well as they did.”
