TALLAHASSEE (AP) — The owners of a Tallahassee apartment complex say an overcrowded party contributed to the floor collapsing from under the partygoers.

A statement from the owners of Seminole Grand says “the excessive number” of party-goers “cannot be overlooked as a contributing cause of the accident.” The statement released Thursday also says the party’s promoters didn’t notify them of the party.

Police reports say about 200 people were at the
party on Oct. 21 when the floor gave way, injuring
55 people. City officials said the building was up to code.

The statement says party guests had to pay $2 to get in, adding: “It is beyond dispute that the number of guests in the upstairs unit at the time of the accident far exceeded the allowable capacity of the unit.”
