MURDOCK — In a hotly debated and highly controversial vote, the Charlotte County Commission on Tuesday sided with county administration on a list of contentious contract issues that the county and the local firefighters union have been disputing for nearly two years — a move the union says is in direct violation of fair labor laws, and vows to fight.

After listening to nearly five hours of testimony from attorneys for both the county and International Association of Fire Fighters AFL-CIO Local 2546, before a packed chamber of firefighters and their spouses, commissioners voted 4-1 to accept staff’s recommendations on 17 issues that were brought before them at a public impasse hearing Tuesday at the county administration building. Commissioners Robert Skidmore, Bob Starr, Chris Constance and Tricia Duffy voted in favor of the recommendations, with Commissioner Stephen R. Deutsch dissenting.
