HULL — Representatives of the United States Environmental Protection Agency have been speaking recently with some residents of Hull about the former creosote plant. A few residents who live adjacent to the contaminated site may be able to connect to the public water line, under a proposal extended by CSX Transportation.

EPA has been overseeing sampling and cleanup work being done by CSX at the property where wood used to be treated with creosote for use as railroad timbers. Creosote contains hazardous compounds, some of which entered the groundwater. Although CSX did not operate the creosote plant itself, the company acquired the property formerly owned by Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and thus became responsible itself for the cleanup.
