Woman presumed drowned in Peace River

A sheriff's boat plies the fast-moving Peace River as rescuers search for the woman who reportedly drowned there Sunday. The Sarasota Sheriff's Office, Punta Gorda Police Department and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission helped DeSoto County Sheriff's Office in the search Sunday and Monday.

Nearby residents gathered Monday on the State Road 70 West bridge over the Peace River, waiting for any news in the search for a woman who reportedly drowned there Sunday. The river flow is especially high after last week's heavy rains from Tropical Storm Isaac.

ARCADIA — An unidentified woman is presumed to have drowned in the Peace River on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday authorities continued to search both for her and a man they believe may have pushed her to her death.

Another man, 28-year-old Andrew Jeremy Skevington of the 2200 block of N.W. Pine Creek Ave., Arcadia, was arrested by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office on a charge of accessory after the fact.
