PORT CHARLOTTE — With the help of several dozen volunteers bearing shovels, 17-year-old Erik Colleen of Boy Scout Troop 95 came a step closer to earning the rank of Eagle Scout Saturday by completing a community project.

He led the crew in building an outdoor classroom with a circle of sturdy desks under the shade of a cypress grove and a butterfly garden behind Meadow Park Elementary School.
