NORTH PORT — North Port police have arrested a 21-year-old man they say broke into and stole from First Baptist Church last year.
According to an NPPD report, the church pastor, who had locked up the Dorothy Avenue church the night before, called police at 8 a.m. Aug. 25, 2011, to report a burglary. The pastor told officers when he arrived, he found small pieces of glass all over the floor near his office door, which was open. When he entered the office, he found the window-unit air-conditioner had been pushed from the open window and was on the floor near his desk, the report states. Officers checked the rest of the church and found two other office doors with smashed windows. The offices had been rifled though, according to the report. While six laptop computers were untouched, a $100 roll of 44-cent stamps, $1,000 in cash and an electronic safe, valued at $300, were missing. On Thursday morning, just after 9:30 a.m., police arrested Shawn Allen, of the 6600 block of Rue Court, North Port, and charged him with burglary and theft more than $300 but less than $5,000. He is being held at the Sarasota County Jail on $100,000 bond.
