Anyone traveling along U.S. 41 in Charlotte County is familiar with the scene: the seemingly endless stream of car dealerships, tattoo parlors and smoke shops that line the highway from one end of the county to the other.

It’s an image that, in some ways, has come to define this aging community made up largely of retirees and those who serve them. It’s also an image the local business community is eager to shed.
