PUNTA GORDA — Jeff Cain and JR Whaley are partners most of the time as coaches of the Charlotte County Blue Fins youth team. Even as rivals, as they were Wednesday evening, they share a common goal: To make the county more competitive in swimming.

“If they get better, we get better, and if we get better, they get better,” Cain said.
