The cover of Vernon Peeples’ new book shows an illustration of the town’s first train station and a section of an 1851 map that likely was the first coastal chart using Punta Gorda as a place name.

Eminent local historian Vernon Peeples just published his book on the early years of Punta Gorda. Titled “Punta Gorda: In the Beginning, 1865-1900,” it is a masterpiece of scholarship and storytelling and a must-read for both hard-core history buffs and residents with only a passing interest in the origins of Charlotte County.

Peeples will sign copies of the book from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the downtown Punta Gorda campus of FGCU, located beneath the parking garage in Herald Court Centre, 117 Herald Court. He will be accompanied by James Abraham, proprietor of Book-broker Publishing, who provided the editorial, organizational and graphic touches that help make the book so special.
