Storm topples trees, power lines

This tree fell over during a severe thunderstorm Friday evening, blocking the roadway on the 21000 block of Cornell Avenue in Port Charlotte, according to a Charlotte County Sheriff's report. Although the tree did not bring any wires down on Cornell, high winds, rain and hail did wreak havoc elsewhere in Port Charlotte — such as over on the 21300 block of Quesada Avenue — taking down power lines and trees, and strewing other debris. There even was a report of a brush fire behind Charlotte Sports Complex (off State Road 776), due to a lightning strike. In addition to the Sheriff's Office, Charlotte County Fire/EMS and Florida Power & Light were on hand to deal with the storm's aftermath.
