BOCA GRANDE — There will be more than tarpon fighting at the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series tournament, scheduled for Sunday at Gasparilla Island State Park — organizers are expecting 25 teams to compete for a first prize valued at $50,000, and $20,000 in other prizes.
But a grassroots effort also is under way — to protest the tournament’s practices. The website www.savethetarpon.com and a related Facebook page encourage people to turn out for a “peaceful protest” of the tournament, starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
