EAST CHARLOTTE COUNTY — A thunderstorm turned unexpectedly violent near Babcock Ranch in Charlotte County late Sunday afternoon, but a tornado did not touch down, according to the National Weather Service in Ruskin.

Instead, straight-line winds of up to 75 m.p.h. caused some minor damage across a four-mile stretch, knocking down trees, power lines and damaging farm equipment, said meteorologist Logan Johnson.
