Vernon Peeples’ new book, “Punta Gorda, In the Beginning, 1865-1900,” provides a fascinating look at the city’s heritage. The cover shows an illustration of the town’s first train station and a section of an 1851 map that was likely the first coastal chart to show Punta Gorda as a place name.
