NORTH PORT — By 2 p.m. Tuesday, most of the 100 Imagine School at North Port teachers had resigned. Seconds later, they signed a new contract with Sarasota Preparatory School to keep their jobs, benefits and classes in place.
Meanwhile, Imagine Schools Inc., the Virginia-based parent company that has overseen the charter school for five years, was filing a 100-plus-page temporary injunction to stop the school’s embattled principal, Justin Matthews, and the local governing board’s actions. On Friday, the governing board of Imagine School at North Port voted to terminate its management contract with Imagine Inc. and start the newly named charter school in the two same campuses along Toledo Blade Boulevard. A 98-page complaint, which includes possible damages in excess of $15,000 against Matthews and the board for defamation and other alleged actions, also was filed with the injunction. A hearing is planned Friday morning in Sarasota.
