Free is the operative word Saturday at the Venice Airport where the Venice Aviation Society Inc. (VASI) will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an open house.
Airplanes have been flying into Venice at least since Jan. 13, 1927, when a plane landed in front of the Hotel Venice with a delivery of strawberries for hotel guests. That landing was about where the parking lot for Epiphany Cathedral is today. In those days it was a field. The hotel serves today as an assisted living facility known as The Summit at Venice.
