A Florida scrub jay comes in for a landing on the head of Peace River Audubon Society member Mike Krzyzkowski.
Each year, Krzyzkowski and some 40 other bird watchers and nature lovers voluteer in the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count, an international citizen science wildlife survey. It is the largest and longest-running animal census in the world.
They say the early bird catches the worm. In the case of the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count, the early bird gets counted.
“If you’re counting owls, you’re usually out counting by 4:30 a.m.,” said Edith Miller of the Sarasota Audubon Society.
