19 motorists cited in 53-car I-75 pileup
The Florida Highway Patrol has concluded that rainy weather and driver error contributed to a 53-vehicle crash Oct. 5 on Interstate 75 near the Sarasota-Manatee county line that sent 22 people to hospitals and shut down the highway for six hours.
The investigations revealed that there were a total of 21 traffic crashes resulting in 52 injuries with 22 of the injured being transported to hospitals for further medical treatment. Of the 22 that were transported, two were flown out via medical helicopter due to the extent of the injuries sustained in the traffic crash.
