Mettie Turrell Cullen Six
Mettie Turrell Cullen Six, 97, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, and went home with the Lord.
She was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Lewie and Margaret Blair Turrell.
Mrs. Six delivered newspapers on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle for Deland Dailey Sun in Florida from 1930, until she graduated from Deland High School in 1933, with honors. She graduated from Harrisburg Hospital in Pennsylvania nurses training in 1936, and was a member of Harrisburg Hospital Alumni Association. Married to George G. Cullen, in March 1937, until his death in 1969. He was a partner of Cullen Brothers, Appliance Store and they were the owners of Sporting Hill Shopping Center in Camp Hill, Pa. Mettie also owned a ceramic shop. She was married to Bayne B. Six, in November 1991, until his death in 2002. Mettie was a member of Pegasus Travel Club, Soroptomist Club of Camp Hill, New Cumberland Junior Civic Club, Charter Member and past president of New Cumberland Woman’s Club, and New Cumberland Civic Club. Charter member of M.J. Hummel Club, charter member of Armitage Golf Club, and Ladies League of Camp Hill, where she was club champion in 1974 and 1989. Member of the Central PA Amateur Women’s Golf Assoc., and Del Tura Country Club, North Fort Myers 18 hole Woman’s Golf Assoc., and was champion and won the Presidents cup there in 1995 at 90 years of age. She made a hole-in-one in 1993. Mettie was a member of Good Shepherd Church of Englewood. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and for her positive attitude and love of life. Mettie will now be joining family, friends, and loved ones in her new heavenly home.
She is survived by her daughter, GiGi (John) Barna of Rotonda West; stepchildren, Fred (Marie) Six of New Jersey, and Patty (Denny) Corby of California; granddaughters, Stephanie (Shawn) Lightfoot, and Jennifer Corkle; great-grandchildren, Cory and Kyle Lightfoot, and Marley Corkle all of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William and Donald Turrel; and her daughter, Lorayne Cullen Bills Tritt.
