Hazel Mary Vanderveer

Hazel Mary Vanderveer, 95, of Hillman, Mich., passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Hillman Haven.

She was born to William and Mary (nee Mac Rae) Edgar in Alpena, Mich., Dec. 7, 1916.

Hazel married Mark Vanderveer on Oct. 3, 1937, in Hillman, where she had lived most of her life. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was active in a woman’s group there. Hazel was also a member of Englewood United Methodist Church in Florida, where she spent many winters. Hazel was a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association, and was part of the last class to graduate from the Montmorency County Normal. She then went on to graduate with a degree from Central Michigan University. Hazel taught for 25-plus years, and started in a one-room school in Hawks, Mich., before teaching in Ossineke, Mich., and Alpena, and eventually retiring from Hillman schools. She was an avid card player, and her most pleasurable experiences were times spent with family. Hazel will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Mark Vanderveer of Hillman; daughter, Marcia Bodeen of North Port, Fla.; friend, Esco Long of Venice, Fla.; granddaughters, Anita (Dale) Herbek of Mesa, Ariz., Nancy (John) Burns of Springfield, Mo., and Susan (Steven) Tesar of New Richmond, Wis.; grandsons, Ernie Quinn of Mesa, Mark (Anita) White of Burnsville, Ill., and Eric (Tracy) White of Durant, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Calvin Quinn of Mesa; sister, Margaret Morrow of Swartz Creek, Mich.; nephews, Joe (Sharon) Vanderveer, Larry (Sharon) Vanderveer and Neil (Lynn) Morrison; and nieces, Darlene (Ronald) Wood, Geraldine Hubbard and Ruth Ann (Norman) Benson of Alpena. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Edgar; son, Hugh Mark Vanderveer; daughter, Sylvia Quinn; sister, Helen Sheilds; and nephew, Leslie Morrison.

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the funeral services for Hazel at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Hillman, with the Pastor Donald R. Derby officiating. Interment will take place at Hillman Rust Township Cemetery. Condolence messages can be sent via www.greenfuneralhomes.com.
