Ten years ago Charlotte correctional officer Darla Lathrem was brutally killed by three inmates as they attempted to escape the Charlotte Correctional Institution. Friends and former workers with Lathrem have been involved in many fundraising events since that time to help with scholarships for those interested in police and public safety work.

The first Darla Lathrem Softball tournament was held May 11 at Carmalita Park in Punta Gorda. There were several teams from Charlotte County, Avon Park and players from the DeSoto Corrections Institution.
