The DeSoto County girls weightlifting team is a young team and only two of its 16 members have ever lifted before this season. This inexperience was evident in a tri-meet at Port Charlotte Nov. 28.

The Bulldogs finished a distant third behind Port Charlotte and Lemon Bay. Both of those programs have been in existence for a long time and have a reputation of having large numbers of lifters on their team with a lot of experience. The Pirates had more than 40 members on their team and the Mantas had about 30. Don Southwell, the Mantas coach and graduate of DeSoto County High School, said “it is a small team for the program compared to recent years.”
