HIGHLANDS COUNTY — The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Sherri L. Gross Stewart, 48, of Arcadia, was struck Saturday night and killed on U.S. Highway 27 south of Lake Mirror Drive. According to FHP’s press release, Stewart was walking eastbound on U.S. 27 across the southbound lanes. A sheriff’s office police cruiser driven by a 24-year-old Avon Park resident was driving southbound on U.S. 27 when he spotted the woman. He swerved to avoid a collision but she was struck by the right side of the vehicle. Stewart died at the scene. It is unknown whether alcohol played a role.
